Located about 5 miles north of Cappoquin, Mount Melleray Abbey is a Cistercian Abbey founded in 1832 by a group of Irish Monks who had been expelled from Melleray in Brittany, France. It is still a fully functional monastery and is open to visitors seeking quiet reflection and those who want to see something of a daily routine. It is well worth a visit.
The Grotto to Our Lady of Lourdes on the way up to the abbey is also a favourite spot to visit. During the summer months, all night prayer vigils are every Saturday night. But the Grotto is open for prayer at all times, day or night.
