Whilst doing a little Net Surfing on My favourite part of the World, (Cappoquin) I came across a reference to a Music Festival, held in the last Weekend in March. The thing that surprised Me was the name. The "Winnie Fennel" Festival. Funny thing is that I always though his name was "Willie Fennel" or do I have a different boy-o entirely in mind? Now since the Festival, (remembering the name of a venerable publican where the musicians used to gather every first Friday) holds a more formal concert in the Cappoquin Community Centre in the evenings, I thought where better to settle My confusion. Did I just mis-hear the name. all those Years ago? |

Further to my post of June 10th, just to record that my mother and I visited Cappoquin on July 15th and met with Father Arthure at St Mary's. I telephoned him three nights previously and when we arrived he had already gleaned a lot of information from the Parish Records, including the names of Michael's parents, and the birth dates of his six siblings. Unfortunately Michael doesn't appear, so it seems (as he was the oldest of the children) that he was born elsewhere and moved with his parents to Cappoquin when about 1 or 2 years old. So our search for his roots goes on (family tales speak of Cork and/or Tipperary). However we did find out that in Cappoquin they all lived on Barrack Road (but not the actual house number) and ... Hello, I have roots in Cappoquin and my sister and I went searching for living descendants last July and met an O'Brien family in Lismore, just up the road from Cappoquin. A relation, maybe? |

My great grandfather Michael O'Brien emigrated from Cappoquin to Loughborough, England in 1901. He was a child at the time and travelled with his parents and siblings as well as members of five other families who all initially settled in the same street in Loughborough. The main reason that they emigrated was the closure of a factory in Cappoquin owned by a Mr W.H. Purnell, and the promise of work at his new premises in England. My mother and I are coming to Cappoquin in July 2010 for our first visit. Any information as to where this factory used to be, or indeed where the O'Brien family used to live (maybe members of the family still do!) would be much appreciated. |

Last Week, Breda in Cork was looking for something to do in West Waterford over the long weekend. Google (or which ever) offered this Site in its Search Results and Breda came here. During her visit, she saw something I had posted and as they say "1+1=2". Breda sent Me an E-mail. Breda is a Daughter of My Uncle Jimmie, whose grave I had discovered on My visit in 2009. I had tried to contact her Brother (Michael) during My last visit, but knowing so very little about Jimmie's Family had met with no success. I knew of a Daughter, living in Cork, but again that was all. Thanks to Breda, I have discovered Michael and Mary (her siblings) and rediscovered a connection to another 1st C... I have recently visited a place about 1.5 hours north of Madrid and stayed with some of its residents a farming couple of brothers who showed great interest in Cappoquin when I spoke about it. The place is called Nieva. It is town about the same size as Cappoquin. As I have a house in Cappoquin and have noticed how the Spanish have a great interest in Ireland and its culture. I was trying to find is there any interest in Cappoquin twinning with a similar size town in Spain. I do not know hoe the process is started but I thought I could try to find out if it is something people would be interested in. |

Hi, Tracing information on Michael and Mary Kiely (nee Keane ?). They had at least 7 children but one died sometime in early 1900. Maurice (b1901) Patrick (b 1902) Michael (b1906), Alice (b1904) Margaret (b 1907) and Bridget (b1910). All were born around Cappoquin. Their mothers maiden I think was Keane but not quite sure. Any help would be appreciated. :D Kerry |

Today (Sunday 27th of September) I discovered the Delete Function on this Site and did some Housekeeping by removing all My old Posts. Might Help the old system along by removing old stuff (less clutter you know). In the process I was reminded that My Father died Ten Years ago Today, which might explain why I am feeling so devastated Today. I know They are both in a better place, though this Cold Wet Adelaide day (We have so few) seems somehow Colder and Wetter than usual. I am putting Flowers on My Father's grave, I hope someone puts some on My Mother's grave too. |
